Family Life is an Eagle required merit badge that focuses on understanding and appreciating different types of families and the individual roles in families, finding ways to contribute to your own family life on an ongoing basis, and learning how to conduct and make the most of family meeting times. Scouts will be expected to log their household chores for 90 days, take responsibility for 2 household projects, and host a series of family meetings. This is a great merit badge for younger scouts!
Our council offers prayers of peace and comfort to the family and friends of Dr. Thomas Muir.
Dr. Muir was an Eagle Scout in Troop 5 at First United Methodist Church, where his father served as Scoutmaster. Thomas enjoyed camping, whether summer camps at our council's previous Camp Tom Wooten on Lake Austin or attending the 1953 National Jamboree in Los Angeles.
Thomas would go on to earn advanced degrees in physics and engineering, including a PhD in mechanical engineering, for which he defended his dissertation on nonlinear acoustics. He would publish more than 25 works, mainly dedicated to submarine and mine warfare with Navy and NATO labs and in academia.
Citizenship in the Community is an Eagle required merit badge, which aims to help scouts in Troops 5 and 50 think about their role in the community and learn what it means to be a good citizen within it.
